So in 9 hours i'll be somewhere in the clouds in an aeroplane!!! En route to Amsterdam! Me and Jen have finally packed (always last minute us), my bags heavy, and I look like a purple bug, but that's fine, I enjoy bugging people ;) (I like puns i'm afraid) Hopefully I haven't forgotten anything major (must check passport)!
This week I've been rather nervous and anxious more so than excited. Most likely due to the realisation that we haven't got a great deal physically booked. I know in a past post, I stated ideally everything would be booked up before going, but hey, this is me and Jen you are talking about!! As much as we hate it we do leave things to the last minute! Sorry mum and dad for the last minute stresses :p Anyhow, we have our 2 interrail tickets, our flight out and accommodation for the first week booked up so at least that's something :) For the remainder we have a rough plan of action and i'm sure we will be fine, either way its going to be an adventure :)
Mum was singing annoying songs earlier when she came out with the song with lyrics 'i'm leaving on a jet plane, don't know when i'll be back'. The realisation that I will be leaving England without a set return date became all to real (we know what week we are returning but not what day).
I have to be up at 2:45am, I am trying to decide if it is worth trying to get to sleep or not. You see, i'm normally still awake at 1am, although in bed, I just surf social medias and YouTube on my phone until I drift off to sleep. Hopefully I can manage to fall asleep before the turn of midnight!

Anonymity
Just under
11 months ago I started this blog. Something new to try out to run in parallel with
the new chapter my life was starting. For the entirety of this time only 3
people have known about this blog – My mum, dad and sister. Ok so a few times I have
accidently let slip to friends about it, but I have never once revealed the blog name,
therefore its location was unknown and still anonymous among those I know. The exception to this was last week I woke to a WhatsApp message of my blog link shared with family members, my mum and her big mouth! I've never jumped out of bed so quick to tell mum off (she didn’t realise I wasn’t revealing
it yet). I also had views from Australia, I put two and two together and realised she had shared it to family further afield! But other than that, no one knows. Basically I have been talking to
myself (isn’t the first time that’s happened :p).
I have
enjoyed having this ‘secret project’ as I like to call it. It is something I have
been doing just for myself, where I had no commitment, could post as and when I
wanted, about whatever the hell I wished, without any expectations and
judgement. I have never been one for writing, it isn’t my strong point, I expect
my grammar and spelling isn’t fantastic on here, but who cares! I quit English after
GCSE’s for a reason! This blog has helped me to keep my academic brain
functioning occasionally, and I feel it is a good way to keep my writing skills
relatively ok (for my ability anyways).
However
with my big 6 week European adventure starting in 5 days (eeekk!!), my blog
anonymity is going to disappear this week. I am going to tell family, friends,
work friends and whoever else I bump into about my blog. Like I mentioned in my
first ever blog post,
I enjoy documenting my life. This is where I am going to document my travels.
Providing I gain decent Wi-Fi while away, I plan to blog on the tracks (choo
choo). Whether any of my friends and family actually read what I have to write
is up to them, I will not be offended either way, but it would be nice to share
my adventure with those closest to me.
So hi family, friends, oh and any strangers if you happen to come across this blog. I hope you enjoy what I have to blog about, at times I expect it will be random rubbish, partial to some moans (apparently I moan a lot) but I also hope it will be informative and fun to enjoy!! Also feel free to share it
with people who I may not know but you feel will be interested.
I am sharing this trip with my sister Jen. She will also be blogging on her blog. Although we will be experiencing the
same thing, and both blogging, I’m sure both of our accounts will be varied. I
may talk about something Jen doesn’t, and vice versus. She may decide to talk about an embarrassing story (if any happen) which included me which I would happily not include on mine :p You can find Jens blog by clicking here
On the left side panel you can click through to my other social medias. Alterrnativerly click here to follow my
blog twitter for on the go tweets. Click here to follow my instagram for my photos,
and click here to follow my YouTube, as upon return I plan to make a mini series of my
travels.

European Travels - Where im heading :)
17 days to
go!! I’m sooooooo excited!!
As stated
in my previous blog post, in 17 days I will be embarking on a 6 week European
adventure. Despite having not physically booked much up at this point, we have
a clear idea of where and when we will be heading during this time.
The current
plan of action is:
- Fly out to The Netherlands on 25th April spending 4 nights in Amsterdam, with one day trip to Utrecht. While in Amsterdam we will experience the Kings Day celebrations.
- From the Netherlands we will Head for the cities of Brussels and Brugge in Belgium
- Next we will spend around a week in France, we will definitely be experiencing Paris, with current plans to head to Tours and Toulouse
- Then it will be a whistle stop tour of 2 days in each of Switzerland, Germany, Prague in the Czech Republic and Austria.
- Before finally heading for Italy where we will be spending 2/2.5 weeks touring this country
As you can
see some places we plan to spend longer in than others. Italy is somewhere me
and my sister have wanted to travel to for a long time, so we feel 2 weeks here
will give us the best chance of exploring as many areas of the country as
possible. Whereas there are places such as Switzerland and Germany where we
only plan on spending two days. This is because we can see ourselves visiting
these countries at a later date, whether that’s just another short weekend
visit or longer.
Our current
situation is; we have booked our flights out to Amsterdam, purchased our first
interrail pass (10 travel days in 22 days), and we have booked our Amsterdam
accommodation. We are in the process of working out the logistics for Italy to
work out which ‘one country interrail pass’ would be beneficial to purchase for
this leg of the trip. We will then book further accommodation for the rest of
the adventure and reserve our trains. Ideally this will all be complete by the
25th – wish us luck!

Why travel?
Travel
defined is to make a journey. Whether that’s a personal journey of achievements,
a travel through time or a travel through locations, they are all examples of
travel; a journey.
During my
21 years of life I have travelled through; 2 decades and one millennium
celebration; an educational journey that took me to 3 different schools as well
as a new city for my university studies; many caravanning trips around the
United Kingdom and the odd summer holiday abroad. However my travel journey is
constantly on-going! In 37 days I will be taking a new journey, one lasting 6
weeks which will take me around Europe. So why travel?
Admittedly
travel isn’t something I have always considered. Realistically I have only
started considering it in the past couple of years. The sudden change in
interest can be pinpointed to 3 circumstances over the past couple of years.
The 3 circumstances opened my eyes to look further afield, leave the comfort
zone and allow for greater possibilities to live life and have fun!
Relocating
to Derby for University:
Up until
the age of 18 I had lived my life in the same one house, at my 3 local schools.
The biggest move I undertook was moving bedrooms. Other than holiday I had no
reason to explore further; family, friends, education were all situated within
this county.
The big
move to Derby meant leaving all these comfort zones to set up home in an
unfamiliar town whereby I knew no one, with a commitment to a 3 year course.
The outcome was I had a ball and discovered that living somewhere else was an
enjoyable experience. The outcome of this landmark means that I now consider the
option of being away from my hometown for longer periods of time as a strong possibility.
A
University trip to Brussels, Belgium:
A 3 day educational
trip to Brussels to look and observe the transport system on the face of it
sounds dull and mundane. The truth is that it opened my eyes to the life of
travelling. We stayed in a basic hostel; had to understand, plan and use local
public transport to get from A to B within a set timeframe while undertaking tasks;
find food (and drink) while on a student budget and get to grasps with
everything written and said in a foreign language.
Although
timetabled tasks were set for this trip, it was a more relaxed approach to that
of school trips. More times than not, we were left to our own devises to
complete the work. Some tasks didn’t have set locations to be completed at,
meaning we were left to decide where to get a train or tram to. We were also given
‘free’ time to do what we wished. Spontaneous planning was an important factor
within this trip, something I really enjoyed. I enjoyed visiting ‘mini Europe’
and ‘Manneken Pis’ which gave me an insight into sightseeing. This trip also
made me realise it is ‘who you go with’ that is important. I was with my little
group of university friends and we had a ball!
Youtubers:
I have
never been one to watch much TV – films and TV series don’t interest me, and
anything that requires my full attention for a long amount of time, also don’t appeal
to me. However, I can easily spend several hours a night just wandering through
YouTube; video after video after video.
When it
comes to travelling inspiration FunForLouis and Ben Brown are where I look.
Documenting (something I enjoy) their everyday lives while travelling all over
the world has given me a visual representation that there is so much of the
world I would like to see. Their enthusiasm for their ventures, to document so
others can witness parts of the hidden world through their experiences and
their living life to the full attitude inspires me to get out there and
explore!
Life’s too
short to stay in one place!

L.O.N.D.O.N. LONDON!
L.O.N.D.O.N. LONDON!!! A game I used to play with my sister,
cousins and grandparents during my childhood, a game which brings many happy
memories :)
Ironically London is actually a place I also hold many memories
of. The great capital of my country, a place over 3 hours from my hometown, but
somewhere I will happily travel to without a second thought. I remember that
from a very young age I always had a massive interest of London. Even now I have
cushions, ornaments, posters, signs, socks, shower curtain, etc. that are of
London design, I love it!
I recall the first time my parents took me and my sister to
London many years ago. I had always expressed an interest in Big Ben, and I was
eager to visit it. An ideal family day out :) Ever since that trip my parents took us on more family days out to London,
leaving in the early hours, driving to Richmond and then getting the tube into
central. On one occasion we actually stayed overnight in the Canary Wharf area,
this allowed for a family treat to see Fame the musical. Something my parents
had always wanted me and my sister to experience. I also chose to spend my 18th
in London Billy Elliott the musical.
Every trip I take to London I turn into a complete tourist
in my own country, I always seem to visits the same landmarks; Big Ben, Houses
of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, etc. I could never get
bored of visiting these.
This leads me on to my recent visit. One early morning in
January my sister and I caught the Megabus down to London, arriving at Victoria station at 9.30am
ready for 2 days exploring yet again this city. However, this time we wished to
visit new places we hadn’t been before. Ok so we did visit the generic
landmarks as well, I mean it would have been rude not to!
| 5:30am waiting for the Megabus to London!
To maximise our limited time on this trip we produced a
rough itinerary for the two days:
|
- Day 1:
- Covent Gardens
- Leicester Square
- Westminster Abby/Big Ben
- Trafalgar Square
- Camden Town
- Southbank
- Day 2:
- Hyde Park
- Buckingham Palace
- Tower of London
- Cutty Sark area
Day 1
Cameras in hand, warm clothes on and overnight backpacks we
headed to our first location – Costa!! Now anyone who knows my family know that
we enjoy a good Costa and are known for it being our first port of call on a
trip out!! A hot chocolate and a latte later we felt awake enough to explore!
| Our costas to fuel our energy for two busy days |
Walking feet on, we arrived at Buckingham Palace just in
time for a procession. Next it was a walk up to Trafalgar Square; somewhere I
have many childhood memories of feeding the pigeons at. Unfortunately the pigeons
are long gone but this is still a place I enjoy chilling at and people watching.
Our walk continued onto Covent Gardens. I was a little disappointed with this area;
I expected it to be more thriving with a greater selection of entertainment.
The highlight here was seeing a man making music through a traffic cone.
Following here we walked to Leicester Square and visited M&M world. A
massive shop full of m&m memorabilia, I really enjoyed the feel of this
place.

Time to experience the London Underground! Even at 21 the
tube still excites me! I like the buzz of train hopping with all different
people commuting for all different reasons together. We jumped on the northbound
northern line train to Camden Town. Despite being only a few tube stations on
from central London, as soon as you exit the station here the atmosphere is completely
different. It is as if you are in a completely different city altogether.
Street performers, street music, street art and street markets just fill the area.
We spent a good couple of hours here enjoying the vibe, photographing/filming
memories and of course visiting a local coffee café.

| Camden Town |
Upon leaving Camden we popped back on the train during rush hour
and headed to our hostel in Earls Court. This was also a new experience for us
both. Normally we stay in Travelodge’s but this time we decided to play the
ultimate tourists at a hostel. We actually decided to trial this method of accommodation
as in a matter of weeks (from writing this) me and my sister are off travelling
around Europe, where we will be staying in hostels. This particular experience
was pleasant. We stayed at St James Backpackers. The location couldn’t have
been more ideal, the price (we paid for a 3 bed private room despite their only
being two of us) was impressive for being located in central London, and the
staff made our welcome feel very safe.
An hour of rest of recuperation allowed us enough energy to head
out into the London night. Southbank Wagamamas was the location for dinner
where we met my sister’s university friend Georgia. We then spontaneously decided to
head for the Shard for cocktails. Georgia stated that it would be a 15 minute
walk; 30 minutes and my favourite photo of this trip later we were on the 31st
floor with a cocktail in hand, live music and a sight to die for while having a
lovely catch up.

Day 2
Jumping out of our bunk beds we were all checked out of the
hostel by half 9. A quick stop at Sainsbury’s for breakfast donuts (we needed the
sugar energy) to eat for our long walk to Hyde Park. A good 45 minutes of
chatter, photographing the national history museum and seeing a cyclist fall off;
we arrived deciding to hire Boris Bikes for the first time! Hassle was our
first impression; one of our release codes ironically wasn’t released to us.
Stereotyping contact call centres we prepared for 20+ minutes on hold to the
Boris Bike contacts, however within minutes of dialling our solution had been
rectified and we were on our hour cycle around Hyde Park in the lovely but cold
sun.

Morning workout done, we tubed it to Greenwich. Lunch time was
looming so we visited Frankie and Bennys on the waterfront. I really wanted to
visit the Greenwich meridian line to get my inner geography geek out but a lack
of time and finding out wed have to pay we gave that a miss. We did however
visit a church. I’m not religious so normally this wouldn’t be an interest for
me to visit. However, this isn’t any old church! It is St Alfege Church, the
church my grandparents got married at! A piece of family history, I enjoyed
stepping inside and seeing where they tied to knot!
| The Cutty Sark |
We then headed back to central London, wandered around Westminster
for a while before heading back to Victoria to hop on the coach back home!
![]() |
| Parliament Square; Big Ben, me in a telephone box; London Eye lit up at night |
It was a very enjoyable trip, which didn’t cost an arm and a
leg and I can’t wait for my next adventures in Europe :)
I have also made a video to accompany this blog post of my trip to London. Watching people
like Ben Brown and Fun for Louis on YouTube inspired me to film my adventures.
This is something I have wanted to do for a while and I thought this was the
perfect opportunity to start. It is my first attempt at video making so please
take a watch and let me know what you think :)

#TimeToChange mental health
When searching for an NHS definition of ‘mental health/illness’
it appears there is no set description. If my own country’s medical service cannot
define exactly what ’mental health/illness’ is, then how can it be understood and
accepted entirely in society? No wonder there is a stigma attached.
Everyone has mental health; some are gifted with good mental
health, while others experience moods whereby they feel down. For many, feeling
down is common, but they are able to bounce straight back up from it. Others
suffer longer term, causing more significant damage resulting in mental
illness. Sometimes there is no trigger story or real reasoning behind the 'down' period. Depression, bipolar, panic attacks, anxiety, schizophrenia are all
examples of mental health illnesses.
5th February 2015 is the #TimeToChange, a day
whereby taking 5 minutes to talk about mental health is being encouraged, to soften
the awkwardness of talking freely about this sensitive topic and to break down
the stigma wall, with the hope of integrating its acceptance into society.
I personally have grown up surrounded by relatives and
family friends who suffer from mental health issues, most notably my own
mother. I also have friends who at our young adult ages have been diagnosed as
sufferers. I personally have not been diagnosed with a mental health illness,
although during a dark few months of my life, in hindsight, I probably was
suffering with depression, I just didn’t realise at the time. This shows it
affects anyone regardless of age, gender, etc.
1 in 4 people suffer from mental health, so this is a
broader issue than is realised. Yet society; educational institutions,
workplaces, celebrities, politicians, general public, even healthcare institutions,
don’t class it as a genuine illness and discriminate against its sufferers.
Trust me, even within the last year I’ve witnessed the disgusting handing
towards a sufferer within a workplace environment. How is one meant to be able
to look after their own wellbeing if those whose job it is to make sure they
are safe and well at work, cannot even accept the illness?
This is why, I feel that today is an important day to raise
awareness and talk about mental health!! So please take 5 minutes to hold your
own conversation surrounding this topic, and help break down and ultimately eliminate
the stigma!
My hope is that one day there is no stigma, it is accepted
in society just as much as someone suffering with cancer, or a broken leg is
accepted for example. I also hope that procedures are implemented into society
to help those when needed. Whether that’s an extra day off a week to allow
their minds to recover, or just somewhere to escape to for 5 minutes.
Some useful links surrounding this topic are:
…although there are many more out there – just search ‘mental
health’!

2015 - This is my year!!
I’m back!! I never intended to take a break a mere 3 months
(or 4 blog posts) in from starting this blog. It just happened, my life got
hectic. The main piece of news during my absence is I got a job, my first job! Only part time in retail but nonetheless, its taken over my life. Trying to get
used to working different shifts throughout the week, at all hours of the day, has been challenging. Hence
other aspects of my life (such as this blog) had to go on the back burner for a
while.
But i'm back now, with greater motivation to blog :)
2015 has already seen my university graduation ceremony
(blog post coming soon) and a trip to London (click here for the blog post). It will also feature my European travels with my
sister. I will be documenting this adventure on here, from
the process of organising to the actual traveling.
I have also linked AmesterAmes (click here) up to
Bloglovin.
